English

During the first few weeks together we will focus on good handwriting and complete the Grammarsaurus unit to establilsh sentence structures. We will share a book called ‘Troll Swap’ by Leigh Hodgkinson where the children will be describing the characters and using the ideas within the story to write their own. Following on from this, we will read ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. We will focus on non-fiction writing and the children will write informative sentences about owls. Throughout these units we will practise writing sentences using capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and apply the phonemes they have learnt in their phonics lessons.

All of the children will have a daily phonics session where they will revisit graphemes that have learnt, learn new ones and apply them to words and sentences.

Maths

Year 1 Maths– During the Autumn term, children will be counting forwards and backwards, sorting, finding one more and one less and will begin to compare amounts using vocabulary such as more than, less than and equal to. The children will be introduced to number lines, which are a great resources later on for addition and subtraction. The next unit is addition and subtraction. The children will practise using and drawing part whole models, finding fact families and bonds within and to 10.

Year 2 Maths-The children will build upon what they have learnt previously to count and make numbers to 100.  We will make numbers using Base 10 which will support the children’s understanding of how these larger numbers are composed. The children will be able to identify the tens and ones within each number.  Following on for this, they will add and subtract ones, tens and multiples of tens. At the end of the unit, the children will add and subtract two, two digit numbers (e.g. 27+14, 33-16). Every fortnight the children will complete a challenge to aid their problem solving skills.

The children will be planning and carrying out a scientific investigation. We will begin to look at the seasons and the changing weathers and before Christmas we will study living and non-living.
